Committees

Membership

Yvette Rouse and Bevelyn Sherrill

The primary goal of the Membership Committee is to support the growth of the National Association of Black Social Workers, Inc. (NABSW) by recruiting, reclaiming, retaining, restoring, refreshing and providing resources to NABSW chapters and individual members.

Among the goals the committee set for 2006 were to continue seeking outreach and recruitment sites and potential chapters. Follow-up was to include Rhode Island, Syracuse, and Kansas City, along with Winston Salem State University. Additional goals targeted for 2006 included maintaining informed and active involvement with newly affiliated and potential chapters, improved communication, effective relationships, advocacy for improved database, and on-line membership renewal.

More specifically, committee efforts were to increase new chapters by 10% resulting from development and promotion activities, and conducting aggressive outreach. A review of problem-solving procedures, and the provision of prompt feedback to assist with chapter needs and expectations were targeted as means to increase chapter retention. Continued committee participation in new chapter orientation during the Annual Conference, and chapter roundtable sessions at quarterly National Steering Committee meetings were also listed among 2006 committee goals.

The committee re-designed the chapter "Survival Guide" in addition to procedural and chapter building material for dissemination by National Office.

In 2007, the committee will be in a transition period and under the leadership of new co-chairs; consequently, the following goals represent a continuation of goals carried over from 2006 combined with those established under the new leadership.

  • Develop and promote activities to increase the number of chapters by 10%,
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase local chapter membership by 10%,
  • Develop and implement strategies to reclaim inactive chapters (1/region and/or 10% of the inactive list),
  • Conduct aggressive outreach to students,
  • Provide support to local chapters in their retention effort,
  • Develop a “How to Manual” for chapter development (Parent Chapter and Student     Chapter manuals),
  • Participate in the new chapter and membership orientation during the Annual Conference,
  • Encourage chapter participation in the chapter roundtable sessions at National Steering Committee meetings,
  • Request membership information from all chapters (application forms, membership dues, brochures, and other printed materials, etc.) and develop a chapter resource guide/kit,
  • Identify a Membership Liaison in each of the five NABSW regions to monitor membership concerns in the region, and
  • Provide prompt feedback to chapters/individuals seeking assistance from the Membership Committee
